Is artwork really all that important when you're developing a new mobile application? Well, is sugar important to baking a cake? If you answered “no” to either of those questions, we should talk. And we'll provide the cake.
App developers all too often pay the most attention to the technical side of app design. Don't get us wrong; smart coding makes apps easier to use, and it's critical to the design process. But the look of your app can make or break it in a marketplace that's becoming more competitive every day. Let's take a look at how your visuals are just as important to your app as your tech.
Noupe.com recently published a detailed article about the Creative Designs for Mobile Applications and their importance to the success of an app.
What an app looks like is the first aspect people notice about it—even before they download it, and certainly before they test it out and see how it functions. That initial visual impression affects the entire user experience and will likely determine the ultimate success of an app.
You've got one chance at a first impression, and your artwork is crucial to making it a good one. In a market with over one million apps—and many which do the same thing—the look of your app can be the deciding factor.
Even if you've got a well-known brand that's firmly established, design is still important even to your most loyal customers. In this UX Booth article, they note the following findings of an app-design survey:
...researchers at the Harris Interactive firm—as commissioned by EffectiveUI—discovered that among a US-based sampling of over 780 individuals that are over 18 years old, the majority will abandon a mobile app if it is too difficult to use.
That includes the graphics in your app interface. If they're confusing or hard to read, you run the risk of having your app uninstalled—and negative word-of-mouth, to boot.
In a nutshell, mobile device users want apps that simplify their lives or entertain them—and they want to know what they're getting before they tap the “download” button. It's the visuals on your splash page, and your listing in the app store, that will draw them in. Keep those visuals attractive, simple and consistent from screen to screen, and your app is likely to perform better over the long run.
So, is artwork important to app design? No. It's vital.
